Suba Aluth Avuruddak Wewa!

At Mogo Media Academy, creativity doesn’t just live in our classrooms or studios—it thrives in the spirit of our community. This year’s Avurudu celebration, marking the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, was a vibrant reflection of that spirit. What made this event truly special was the passion and initiative shown by our students in the lead-up to the celebration. Students from all four creative diploma courses—Animation, VFX, Game Development, and Concept Art—came together to brainstorm, plan, and design every detail of the event. From creating beautiful thematic decorations to organizing traditional and modern games, their collaborative energy brought the entire academy to life.
It was heartwarming to witness the bond that formed among students across different disciplines. Their shared ideas, problem-solving, and creative input turned the academy space into a festive, cultural haven. Handmade décor infused with modern digital touches gave the event a unique visual identity, showcasing the students’ design thinking and artistic talent beyond the classroom setting. This spirit of teamwork and ownership strengthened the Mogo Media community, proving that when creativity and collaboration unite, something truly magical happens.
The celebration officially began with the arrival of our esteemed guests, followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp. This moment, rich in symbolism and cultural significance, was carried out with grace by our Director Mr. Madhawa Madhawala, General Managers Mr. Sachitha Kalingamudali and Mr. Puritha Wijewickrama, and Head of Academy Ms. Madonna Joy. As the flame was lit, it marked not just the start of a cultural ceremony, but the illumination of unity, tradition, and youthful creativity.
Following the national anthem, attendees gathered to share a traditional Avurudu table filled with delightful sweets such as kiribath, kavum, kokis, and more. This communal feast brought students, faculty, and staff together in appreciation of heritage and shared joy. With everyone gathered and spirits high, the event flowed into a series of captivating cultural performances.
Students performed traditional dances that echoed the rhythm and beauty of Sri Lankan heritage. These performances, prepared and rehearsed with dedication, spoke volumes about the talent and enthusiasm of our learners. The artistry and expression on display honored the cultural roots of Avurudu while also showcasing the excellence and creativity we nurture at the academy.
The celebration then took a lively turn with a variety of games and activities. From age-old favorites to digital game setups created by our very own Mogo Games Studio, the games section was a thrilling mix of tradition and technology. Laughter, cheers, and friendly competition filled the air as students took turns participating and encouraging one another, making this a highlight of the day.
After a fulfilling session of games and performances, everyone came together for lunch. Faculty and students shared a delicious meal side by side, breaking barriers and building connections beyond academic roles. The dining hall echoed with laughter, music, and conversation, setting the stage for the final part of the event—dancing! Students, along with faculty, joyfully celebrated to the beat of music, turning the space into a dance floor of unity and pure happiness.
To conclude this vibrant day, we honored one of the most beloved traditions of Avurudu—crowning the Avurudu Kumaraya and Avurudu Kumari. The winners, chosen for their spirit, participation, and positivity, were crowned and gifted amidst applause and celebration, bringing the event to a joyful close.
The Avurudu celebration at Mogo Media Academy was more than just a festival—it was a beautiful expression of our core values: collaboration, culture, creativity, and community. It reminded us that while we equip students with the skills to shape the future of animation, gaming, and design, we also create a space where they can come together, celebrate their identity, and build lasting connections.
Suba Aluth Avuruddak Wewa! May the new year bring even more opportunities to learn, grow, and create—together.
